Homemade Dairy-Free Milk

Dairy-free milks are of course the vegan and lactose-free alternative to regular cow’s milk. In recent years, they’ve grown in popularity, but this new reputation often means they come with an annoying price tag. Theft! Milk alternatives are incredibly simple to make up for yourself at home. Here are two to try for yourself.

ALMOND MILK - MAKES 1 LITRE
1 mug, 200g blanched almonds
Soak the almonds in a bowl of water overnight.
Drain them and add to a blender with 900ml water.
Blend for a couple a couple of minutes until smooth. To make the milk a little sweeter, you can add a couple of spoonful’s maple syrup or a handful of Medjool dates to the blender and again, make smooth.
Use a fine sieve, like muslin, to strain the milk into a jug.

OAT MILK – MAKES 1 LITRE
1 mug, 120g oats
Soak the oats for half an hour in cold water.
Drain them, then place them in a blender with 900ml water.
Blend for half a minute, until smooth.
Pour through a fine sieve and discard pulp.
